Helping With Treatment

Some people with bipolar disorder stop taking their medicine without consulting their doctors, especially once they start feeling better. If you suspect your loved one has stopped taking his or her medicine, you may want to point out the success achieved so far—and the importance of talking with the doctor and continuing the treatment plan as prescribed. You can also remind the person you care for about doctor’s appointments or treatment instructions.

Here are some ways you can help a person with bipolar disorder take medicine as the doctor ordered:

  • Use medicine calendars or pill boxes labeled with the days of the week. This way, both you and the individual can see if the medicine has been taken
  • Suggest taking medicine at the same time every day, such as at mealtimes
  • If the individual wants to stop the medication, encourage him or her to talk to the doctor first
