If you are part of the network of people caring for someone with a mood disorder, you can help that person manage their condition, by encouraging an open dialogue with the doctor about symptoms. And by seeking help for side effects.

You can also work closely with the doctor to help the person you’re caring for get the most out of treatment:

  • Find out whom to call with questions
  • Discuss the level of function the person you care for is able to achieve
  • Develop a crisis plan in case of emergency or relapse
  • Discuss the importance of taking medicine

Ask lots of questions
If the person you care for has been prescribed a medicine, make it a point to go along on their doctor visit. You can help them understand why the medicine has been prescribed, how to take it, and what to expect. Download questions to ask the doctor (PDF) about treatment, and bring this list to the next doctor visit.

Reinforce the importance of staying on medicine
Some people with mood-related conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia stop taking their medicine without talking to their doctors. This often happens once they start feeling better. It can also happen when they can’t tolerate their medicine’s side effects.

If you suspect that the person you care for has stopped taking their medicine, remind them of the importance of talking with the doctor and continuing the treatment plan as prescribed. You can also help by remembering doctor’s appointments and treatment instructions.

Help the person you care for take their medicine every day and get refills
If the person you care for has been prescribed a medicine, it’s important that they take it every day and that they don’t run out. Download suggestions (PDF) on how to help someone remember to take their medicine and refill their prescription.

Getting the most out of GEODON
